The history of our church building

Reverend Aron Dutton and 123 members of the First Congregational Church who were abolitionists, were granted dismissal from that congregation. They built this building which served as the Third Congregational Church until 1920.
In the 1930’s and 1940’s the building became Chapel Playhouse, a summer theater. Many famous actors performed here. The Christian Science Society acquired the building in 1950 and restored it as The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Guilford.
You are Welcome.
Christ Jesus said “The Kingdom of God is within you.” Mary Baker Eddy writes “'The Kingdom of God is within you.' This spiritual consciousness is therefore a present possibility.” (Science & Health, with Key to the Scriptures).
About Christian Science
"To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
Manual of The Mother Church, Mary Baker Eddy
FAQs
Below are several frequently asked questions about Christian Science.
Is Christian Science also Scientology?
No. Other than a similar name, the two have nothing in common.
Why is it called Christian Science?
Christ Jesus healed those of sorrow, disease, death, and sin through a law of divine Love. This law is illustrated in his parables and healings. Christian Science is the Science behind what Christ Jesus was able to do to show humanity that they are free from sin, disease, and death. This is something that can be practiced and demonstrated by us today.
Why do you call yourselves Christian?
Christian Science is based on the King James Version of The Bible, and Christian Scientists follow the behests, example, and teachings of Christ Jesus. Central to Christian Science theology is the virgin birth, as well as the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Christ Jesus.
Is it true that Christian Scientists do not take medicine?
Generally a Christian Scientist relies on prayer for healing, and in most cases this means that a medical remedy is not necessary. There is no biblical or church mandate to forgo medical intervention, nor do Christian Scientists believe that it is God’s will that anyone suffer or die. A Christian Scientists decision to rely on prayer comes from a deep trust, not a blind faith, in God and an understanding of His power and presence that supersedes the human condition in every circumstance.
